What is an "Ostomy"?

The word "ostomy" refers to a permanent opening created in the body which leads from the inside of the body to the outside, such in the gastrointestinal or urinary tract.  This is referred to in medicine as a stoma. 

Once the stoma is created, it must be properly cared for.  The stoma must be protected from contact with bacteria to avoid infection.

Brands like Convatec, Hollister and other manufacturers have created ostomy products which offer superior protection against infection.  Not only do they protect, they come in a wide range of styles and sizes to ensure a good fit, no matter what a person's size.

Caring for Your Ostomy

Proper care and maintenance of your ostomy will help ensure your good health and a high quality of life.  Some tips to keep in mind include:

* Empty your pouch as often as is needed.  This inhibits bacterial growth and reduces the risk of infection.

* Change your pouch regularly.  This is typically every 4-7 days for adults, and every 2-3 days for babies. 

* Keep the ostomy area clean and inspect regularly for signs of infection.
